Settlement

hands forming heart shape over canada flag

My first country is Iraq, but like many others, we moved to Turkey and lived there for five years while waiting for our immigrant visas for Canada. My family and I finally arrived in Canada in 2012. Coming to a strange and new country was very different and stressful for us. Yet, I was hopeful and was very happy to come to Canada. The only problem was the language. It was very difficult in the beginning, especially when you did not understand what other people around you were saying. So I had to join an English class in a LINC school near my home. Now that we are all settled, I tell my friends and relatives back home that my children go to good schools, my husband has a respectable job, and most of all, there is peace and order around us. We have started to embrace the Canadian culture, the way of life here and especially the four seasons. I still study English until now because my goal is to be a better communicator. I like living in Canada because me and family are safe and secure. The country also takes very good care of our health. Now, we have rights and privileges that we never had before.
