wood block letters spelling BIO

My name is Indu. I have been living in Canada for 2 years and have been learning English for almost 2 years. I was born in Lalitpur, Nepal. I was born in the rich Newari family. Newar was Nepal’s earliest inhabitants and almost 5% of the Nepali populations are Newari people. Newar has their own language, culture, and tradition which are different than the other Nepali people. I am the fourth child. I have one brother and four sisters. One sister died because of jaundice. My father is an ayurvedic physician working in a small shop in the city and my mother was a housewife. In the household, I was the only daughter who achieved a higher education. People in the olden days did not do their post-secondary education like they do today. Because I am Newari, I had difficulties with the study with Nepali. Over time, I practised with words and pronunciation.  After high school, I went to university in Patan Campus and got my Master’s Degree in Economics, Newari, and Politics.

In Nepal, we still have a culture of arranged marriage. My parents talked to a matchmaker and decided to get married. The matchmaker showed me different pictures of men and I found a picture of my husband and decided to marry him. My husband’s name is Hom [] and after 2 years, I gave birth to a pretty daughter, Lucy []. My husband would go back and forth to USA and Nepal because of his job. As time went by, my husband decided to do work and study in Canada with a Bachelor of Arts in Gerontology.

After the earthquake in Nepal, I decided to move to Canada, as my husband had already been in Canada. I never thought I would go to Canada. In Canada, people speak English, but I couldn’t. Canada was different than what I thought. It was a multicultural country. It was difficult for me to communicate with others. Then, I decided to go to an ESL class. I tried very hard to overcome my English problem. I did volunteer work in childminding at YMCA to improve my English each day.

I am now currently working at the Travelodge Hotel as well as doing my English course online. Even though there were a lot of problems, I faced each challenge. I am really happy with the new world and I am enjoying my life in Canada.
