Terrance Stanley Fox was a famous Canadian activist who supported people with cancer.  When he was 19 years old, he was diagnosed with a malignant tumor and his right leg was amputated.  After 3 years, Terry made the decision to run from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.  He wanted to collect donations for cancer research.

Terry Fox began the “Marathon of Hope” on April 12th, 1980.  He could not complete the marathon because his cancer had spread from his legs into his lungs.  Terry had missed a lot of check-ups because he thought his cancer would not come back.  Ten months after he had to stop running, Terry died, one month before his 23rd birthday. His goal was to raise $1 million and he was able to raise more than $10 million.

Every year people come together to collect money for research and continue running in the Terry Fox Run.
