Winter 2015

Canada

quebec city from water

My husband and I visit a new city every Christmas. Last year we spent three days in Quebec City. A lot of people say Quebec City looks like a European town in North America. After our recent visit, I have no doubt that it is absolutely true.

Holiday spirit makes this Canadian city an absolutely beautiful place to visit in winter. Starting at the end of November, Old Québec is transformed into a real Christmas village. It's something out of a fairy tale. Québec City’s old-world charm becomes more beautiful with Christmas decorations and snowdrift. Neighbourhoods and ancient buildings are very impressive. You can admire magnificent setting with European architecture while wandering through streets.

Walking around the historic places, you can see Old Quebec and the Château Frontenac.  Château/castle Frontenac is the most famous symbol and the most beautiful hotel of the city. Castle Frontenac is impressed with its breathtaking views of the St. Lawrence River and the architecture of the Old fortified City. Everyone can enjoy the magnificent, magical holiday decorations inside the castle. Be sure to visit the “Trees of Hope”! You can admire dozens of fascinatingly decorated Christmas trees, sponsored by local businesses. As well, here you might meet Santa Claus.  You should also try night sledding at the Dufferin Terrace toboggan slide at the foot of the castle Frontenac.

However, you must not forget, at that time, many tourists come to town, so if you dream to take a romantic promenade, you should walk in the night, when the streets are empty.  Christmas trees along the streets, wreaths and large lit snowflakes on the doors, and Christmas lights everywhere fill the winter town. The giant Christmas tree decorates the main square, in front of one of the oldest churches in North America, Notre-Dame-des-Victoires. This is a dreamy picture. You can take a lot of beautiful romantic photos.

If you want to celebrate Christmas authentically, you should attend the Mass in Notre-Dame-des-Victoires or one of the heritage churches of Québec City on December 24th. Also, you could immerse yourself in the magic of the season with holiday concerts where you can hear artists from Québec and abroad singing all the best classic Christmas songs.

In conclusion, Quebec City impresses us very much with European style, unrepeatable charm, historical places and Christmas spirit. Québec City’s Christmas is an exceptional multi-sensory and unforgettable experience!
