My country is a beautiful country, where people live peacefully. But when the war started, everything changed. There was the loss of security, and many people died in this war. It destroyed many places and people lost their homes and property. Many people left the country for fear of their lives and for the lives of their children. I left Syria in 2013, where I was a teacher. I went with my wife to Lebanon airport. I had to sleep in the airport lounge on the chairs for the night. I was so distressed because I did not know anyone there to ask them for help. I traveled to Ghana and asked for asylum. After three years the Canadian government accepted my asylum request. I live in Canada now.

After I came to Canada, I worked as a volunteer with Humanity First, which helped bring a number of Syrian families to Canada. I go with them to the airport to help with the translation so that I can bring happiness to the hearts of the Syrians coming to Canada. I remember how I felt when there was no one waiting for me. In a new country, I always remember how I spent a night at Beirut airport without finding anyone there to help me. I feel great joy when I help Syrian families. Although my English is not very strong, I still try my best to help and bring joy to their hearts. Last month I went to receive three young Syrians from Turkey. I met them at the airport. After that, I visited them at their place of residence. I spoke to them and gave them advice about life in Canada. A week later I took them to the dentist and tried to help them whenever I could because the newcomer needs help. I am happy with this volunteer work with the Humanity First
