Pets

German Shepherd puppy on grass

We were wanting a dog because dogs are loyal, good guardians. We also wanted a dog because we want our child or children to know that dogs are not only pets but are also part of the family. We have been wanting a dog because dogs are very protective of their owners; they can be the guard of your house if you train them well. Our first choice was an Alaskan Malamute but they were too expensive and rare. Our second choice was a German Shepherd because they are smart and loyal, also they are the breed of dog that police use. My girlfriend and I found a breeder on the Island and we contacted them right away. We picked "Zoro" because we wanted a male dog and also he has the biggest paws in the litter, so he might grow to be the biggest. Before we brought Zoro home we made sure that our house was a puppy proof house. We also searched for a high quality  dog food and good quality puppy toys.

When we first brought Zoro home he was a very sleepy and cuddly puppy maybe because he was shy and not used to his new environment. When he was finally settled, he started biting our toes and pants. He also did not know commands like "sit" and "no." He had food aggression and was not potty trained. We also had a problem with getting him to sleep at night and making him feel comfortable inside the crate. We expected too much and it was challenging to keep our patience.

After having Zoro for only two months he showed a lot of progress and change. He is now potty trained and is biting less.  He has also learned his name and some basic commands like "come", "sit” " “down" and "jump." He has also learned not to pull the leash when you walk him. He is now more comfortable inside the crate and does not have any problems sleeping at night. His food aggression has diminished. After two months of having him we noticed a lot of changes with Zoro especially his height, weight, posture, physical appearance and behavior. He is calmer and smarter now. We also learned what is his favorite toys, treats and games are.

In the future, I would like to encourage my dog to be a guardian for my family. I will raise him around my children. I will teach him to be nice and gentle with other kids. I will teach him some new and advanced tricks. I will spend more time with him, I look forward to improving our bond. I also look forward to having an exercise partner. It will be nice to have company during my daliy runs.  I do have a lot of plans with Zoro and I will do my best to accomplish them.

Raising a puppy can be a lot of work, but in the end it's all worth it. The best part of having a dog is that you feel safer. My experience with Zoro has taught me a lot of things, especially patience. I think that patience is very important for me to have because I am going to be a father soon. Zoro also gives me a great sense of family, especially when I how much he has missed me. He has taught me responsibility and I feel that I have become more matured because of him. I am looking forward watching Zoro grow and learn.  Seeing  his progress gives me pride and confidence as a leader of my family.
