My Chinese name is Yao which is the same name for a king in China. I guess my parents expected me to become a great woman when I was born. I was born in Beijing that is the capital of China and I had lived there until I immigrated to Canada. Actually, my parents moved to Beijing from their hometown after their graduation, but they didn’t think their next generation would emigrate again.

I have a big brother who is 5 years older than me. Even though he grew up in my grandparents’ home and we did not live together for a long time, I still can remember he taught me how to play cards in order to be able to invite me when his friends and he lacked the hands to play. After he went to University to another city, and especially after he had the girl friend, I rarely played with him. However, his every girl friend was nice to me and always gave me presents. My brother said in the constant frustration of his love that I was the gainer. I don’t know if it is only a benefit for a person who has a big brother. In my childhood, I also liked to play with dolls and like being a teacher or nursing to take care of them. Being a teacher was my dream at that time.

I studied air transportation management in the university. At that period, I was attracted by various aircrafts. I even could identify each aircraft type, numbers of engines, max passenger capacity, max load capacity, which airline it belonged to and so on. After graduating with excellent results, I worked for two airlines for more than ten years. Thanks to being airline staff, for me it was easier to get visas and free air tickets, so I had a chance to travel all around the world. I have been to the United States, Holland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and so on. Those different cultures and nature scenes made me very excited and I started thinking about going abroad.

In 2007, I applied for Canadian immigration as a skilled worker. At that time, I needed to wait for years to get a response. So after I sent all of documents, I went back to my normal life. At the beginning of 2008, I met my husband through my friend’s introduction. In the same year, we got married. Although we did not have too much romance together, I knew he was the right man for me to marry. Next year our first child was born. My life completely changed: I started to take care of my family more than myself and I did not want to go anywhere just to stay with my family. To my surprise, my immigration got approved in the summer of that year and finally, our whole family decided to go to Canada.

We moved to Canada five years ago. Even though my husband and I need to seek better jobs, we have settled down basically. More and more we like this country, which is peaceful, open, and everybody is equal. I hope we have a better life in the future.
