Chefchaue (pronounced “shef-SHAU-wun”) is a small city in the Rif Mountain in the north-west of Morocco. It is known to be one of the most peaceful and safest places in Morocco and it is gorgeous city in northeastern Morocco and the main city of the province with the same name. This cute little city in the north-western part of Morocco is painted in different shades of blue. Blue walls, sky, stairs, and blue flowerpots: you will find yourself surrounded by the color in various shades when in Chefchauen.

The reasons why the city of Chefchauen in entirely blue

There are many different theories to why Chefchauen is so blue.

A part of residents believes that the blue keeps away the mosquitoes. Because the insects do not like being in the water, the blue walls almost look like flowing water.

Another group states the heat to be the reason for the color. They think that the shades of blue keep the houses cool in summer time.

According to Jewish belief the blue is representative of the sky and to stick their religious practices. They stress that only the Jewish part of the Medina used to be painted blue.

Hike to Spanish Mosque

For lovers of nature, hiking to the Mosque could be a heaven for them. Because the hillside on which the city is built on could be a nice workout, you have to climb the stone with steps that march straight up the slope. When you reach the top you’ll get to see panoramic views at sunsets.

Kasbah Museum

In the heart of the city’s Medina lie the beautiful Andalusian Gardens. Within these gardens stands the Ethnographic Museum (known as the Kasbah Museum), which allow you to learn more about the traditions of the area and different collections of objects that have been found in the region. The Kasbah Museum is a beautiful complex that’s comprised of several building.
