COVID-19

In December 2019, the first human case of a virus was found. This virus that had first appeared in China was named the Coronavirus. News revealed that people who were affected had similar symptoms of a cold. Many did not take the virus too seriously. However, it quickly became a global pandemic renamed as COVID 19. Due to the pandemic, the government was forced to make many different precautions. Examples of the many actions taken by the government include: lockdowns, business closures, financial benefits, and so on.

One of the most influential actions put in place is the lockdown. A lockdown is when families are required to stay at home unless it is absolutely necessary to leave. During the lockdown, even distant relatives and friends are not allowed to visit. As a result, communication is only available through technology. Therefore, many people use apps such as Zoom and Google Meet. However, many have noted that meeting physically is better than virtual meetings. Those in a relationship may break up due to the lack of physical intimacy and communication. Friendships are also affected, as lockdowns prevent gatherings. On the other hand, it allows families to experience some bonding time. Parents, who are normally absent, may be allowed to continue work at home. However, not everyone has been lucky enough to keep their jobs.

The second change that the pandemic has caused is business closures. Due to the pandemic, social distancing is required. As a result, some businesses have been forced to close, such as: indoor gyms and fitness centers, cinemas, and gaming establishments. Business closures also meant that some families have lost lose their health insurance. However, some businesses are open with social distancing rules. For example: restaurants are required to close their dining areas. Meanwhile, takeout and deliveries are still available. While it is possible for businesses to recover after the pandemic, they will likely recover slowly. Small business owners are experiencing financial crisis, but they are also forced to let go of their staff.

Furthermore, the pandemic has caused people to lose their jobs. While it is possible to find a new job, losing a job is stressful and may lead to either mental or physical health issues. To help those who have lost their jobs, the government has initiated the Canada Emergency Response Benefit. Most know this as the CERB, which gives financial support to employed and self-employed Canadians who lost their jobs due to COVID19. However, even the government cannot keep the CERB available forever. Not to mention, not everyone is eligible for this benefit.

Thankfully, there are people who have been working hard to find a solution. As a result, some countries have access to the newly created COVID19 vaccine. It is also said that Canada will receive the vaccine in January 2021. Hearing this news, I hope that the pandemic will be over next year.
