English

Students studying together

I want to share with you some study skills that I developed to read, speak, and write in English. You are highly likely to know some of them already and use them in your study process, but I will tell you about them if you do not know them yet. In the beginning, let me explain which level my English was when I started to study it. I studied English in the field; I had to learn English working as a volunteer when I arrived in Canada. Before that, I had no English skills. The first problem was that I could not hear or distinguish oral speech because people around me used expressions and spoke too fast. So, I found a solution to learn to listen and understand; I watched movies with subtitles. In the beginning, I had to rewind some movie moments a few times, read the subtitles, and listen again and again. I reviewed films several times to understand the story. At the same time, I listened to and read many new words and expressions, but I had no idea about meaning and translation. It was a second problem. I found a helpful solution for the new words like an online translator. But unfortunately, online translators are inaccurate and don't help with expressions translation. To search for meanings of expressions, I would recommend using search engines like GOOGLE. And here is a third problem, which was reading; I was unsure how to write about something. And it is still one of the biggest problems for me. I found that it is good practice to read articles or books. This way, you can see how writers use language tools and study to use them in the same way. Also, reading includes a search of translation of new words and a search of meanings of new expressions. In conclusion, I would suggest practicing as much as possible.
